9. Photoshop behind advertising

In my previous posts, I mentioned that Instagram act as a medium but also a small tool to edit basic color and lighting in photos. To go more advance in photo editing, Photoshop is one of the most use software since it provides more tools compare to other software.

During in class exercise and assignments for my major, whenever we need to edit photos, we straight away open Photoshop and never though about using other software. We need it to enhance our photos , manipulate it or even create an digital art using this software.

Photoshop also acts an important tool for photographers especially for advertisement.
From what I observe , most of the photos/videos for advertisement had been altered before.
mcdonalds01
Ever wonder why our McDonald burger doesn’t looks the same in their advertisement? McDonald Canada made a video to show behind the scene for the photo.

After a long process of styling and photo shooting, they retouch using Photoshop in the end.
See how long and how many people needed to make a burger looks good in an image?

The moment I search “Popular Photoshop advertisement” and “Photoshop ads”, the results are mostly related to fashion magazine, this shows how this software widely used in fashion advertisement.
The same process as the McDonald can be seen for magazines photos.
giphy

Everyone can be a super model using Photoshop.

Why go through so much problem and use Photoshop to make a ‘fake looks’ for advertising?
Lets take a look in the picture below ,
gaga
Photoshop-ed vs Original, which one you prefer to see in your magazine cover?
I prefer photoshop-ed.
I do agree that everyone is beautiful in their own way but not everyone can accept this. It is harsh, but this is reality. Advertising is to promote to everyone in a convincing and perfect way to gain attention in order to benefit their company/brand.

Carolyn Kitch, journalism professor also explains that magazines were…

“dealing in ideals rather than reality,” (Amanda,F., n.d.)

I also found out that there’s a lot of people dislike photoshop-ed advertisement , there’s even some want to ban photoshop ads. It is true that some companies overused photoshop (edit into tiny waist, giant eyes , overly long legs) but if it just for colors, lighting, some small and detail retouch , why not?

Without Photoshop, it can brings huge impact for the photographers. Without the software, how can they have a better lighting photos? how can they force or find a model with a body shape that want? how can they have a background they want? travel all the way to that certain location just for few photos?
Just for one magazine cover and it costs more of their time, finance and efforts.

Do you prefer a truthful photo or a pretty photoshop-ed photo?

8.Bussiness Value in Instagram

As I mentioned previously, Instagram act as important medium for he photographers.
This medium can help increase the popularity of a photographer but that’s not all, it can also help a photographer to make a living.

Instagram had become famous and there’s estimate about 300 millions monthly user/instagrammer.Not only because there’s a lot of users but it is because is convenient for the photographers to promote themselves in few social medias at once. Instagram have an options to share the photos to other social media like twitter and facebook when they upload.

Examples on how photographers make a living using instagram can be seen from two of the photographers, O’Neal and his partner, Edeani. They’ve been added into suggested users lists in instagram by Zollman, a member of instagram community (Farr,C. ,2013).

Because of this, they’ve been receiving a lot emails and offer for photography works. Edeani mentioned that there’s ad agencies and brands willing to pay him hundreds of dollars for him to photography theirs products on instagram. O’Neal also received emails from tourist that visit San Francisco(the place he stay)  , they get to understand well the place by browsing through his photos. He also organized ‘instameets’ ( meeting with his instagrammers) for his followers in that area (Farr,C. ,2013).

Another example can be seen in an interview with a commercial photographer- Julian Calverley.
He’s been on instagram for a while and mentioned that people already commissioning jobs on the phone. He also said that social media is very important for him (Hoyle,A., 2015) because it able to spread his works and communicate with others.

I think a lot of older photographers who don’t embrace social media are absolutely missing a trick. It’s not even a trick, it’s another language that everyone’s speaking and you either speak it or you don’t, and if you don’t you’re missing out on a large chunk of communication (Hoyle,A., 2015).

I really agree with what he said, many blame social media for making people become anti-social, it is true but the advantage for the social media is that it also make one sociable through internet, closer the gaps between people from all over the world and make communication easier.

Especially for freelance photographer, it is never easy to promote themselves and get work to be paid but instagram made their life easier. They can live freely and do what they love, take photos anytime they want as long their mobile is with them, post photos that they’ve taken and eventually job will come to them through this kind of medium. Technology always make life easier.

Not only photographer, even brands and companies like Nike, Starbucks,PayPal etc.. made an instagram account because they realized that there’s business value in it. It’s easier to promote themselves and most of them even encourage users to follow them through contest like “Follow and re-post this photo to have a chance to win…” or “post a photo about our products and hash-tag our brand name”. Some of the brands do hired popular photographer in instagram such as Edeani to take over their instagram account for 1 or 2 days to post the products pictures that taken by him.

As you can see from the examples above, Instagram can become a place to closer the relationship between a photographer/brands with their followers. To me, Instagram not only became an ‘Art Musuem’ ot ‘Blog’ for people to enjoy but also become a tool to communicate with the followers ‘indirectly’.

One problem is that the photo that users uploaded onto instagram can still be sell by other people. Instagram stated in their terms that…

“Once you have shared User Content or made it public, that User Content may be re-shared by others.” (Instagram)

There’s a news about an artist who stole a few photos in instagram and sell it to the public and he earned  $90,000 (Sola,K, 2015), it was quite a big amount. There’s a lot of artist using these apps and websites to promote themselves. In my opinion, users have to understand that once you’ve uploaded to these type of application or website, it is considered “public” and there will be a high possibility that people will steal your images/artwork and benefit themselves.

The moment you set as public, you have to always be ready for the risk of your artwork being steal by others and
I’m sure that most of the people aware with this risk. It is still hard to avoid this if add credits or watermark on the artwork because with today software like Photoshop and open source tutorial, anyone can easily enhance their editing skills and clear out the watermark.

So, why do people still posting up?
Well, Is there even any other ways that are safe but more convenient than this digital technique to promote themselves?

7. Instagram act as an important medium

Marshall McLuhan mentioned in one of his book-‘Understanding media’ that  “The medium is the message” (Mark,F , 2004). In my classmate previous assignment blog, her topics related to McLuhan and she defined that sentences as

“The message is not the content of the app, the medium is the message, it means how the medium(media) has changed our lives instead of the content in it”.

I also found a post from my seniors about instagram act as a new medium. The article in it is similar to what my classmate mentioned,

The medium of Instagram (and to a larger extent the cameraphone) indelibly changed how people think about photography. The message is that communication won over art. Everyone is a photographer.

Below are some of the examples that can be seen from Reuters- a news agency instagram.

New_Jyess

As you can see in the comment section on how these people react to it – they like it. Well, of course since pink sheep is cute but people do not realize that most dyes contain chemicals that can be harmful to these animals.

Another original photo from Reuters that received a lot of likes. The effects from the light and shadow brings a strong feeling for the viewers and makes the photo look nice but Reuters wondered : “Who would want to “like” a picture of malnourished children?” (Rusell,B. ,2014).

From what I’ve observed, instagramers browse photos , give likes and comments but do they even concerned about the contents within the photos before they make these actions? No, the looks and feels are what they concern more, who would even bordered looking at a bad photos using weak photography skills?

But still, Instagram acts an important medium for the photographers. I agree with my senior whom mentioned  in her blog about how instagram has become a space for photographers to share and communicate with others. This is a huge advantage especially for freelance photographers and even for people who just started to step into photography’s field. They can earn some popularity using this medium and also gain some inspiration with it by browsing others’ photos.

So what do you think? Do you want more followers and likes? or Do you prefer to have followers who understand and ‘sees’ the content within your photos before they comment/like?

6. Instagram and filters

Nowadays, there’s a lot of photography apps provided for the users.
One of the famous app is Instagram , users can use their phone camera or app camera to capture photos and upload to instagram.

Instagram is an app for the user to upload photos and also to browse other people’s photos. Work like other social media website and apps, it allow the users to comment and like the photos.

Like I mentioned in my previous few posts, users can retake a lot of time and post the nicer one. Even if all of them looks “unprofessional” , users still able to edit lighting ,size and filters using the app before they upload and share to other social medias.

Filters first come from analog. There are various type of filters, such as lomo, vintage , black and white and so on, consider an old traditional technique that used in the photography field but it is still love by people and even turn this traditional technique digitally. People love it because it look nice or even professional and they can apply it on their photo with just one click. Users can easily skipped through the long process using old technique to produce an image or even skip through the process using digital technique with professional software (exp: Photoshop).

Well, there’s actually a scientific researches and explanation about how filters. According to Yahoo Lab and Georgia Tech, they did an interview with few of the people people and analyzed 7.6 millions photos from Flickr and Instagram. They found out that there’s 12 out of 15 users filtered their photos (Yahoo Labs & Geogia Tech,n.d.) . One of the main motivation for the serious photographer is to enhance ,correct and improve the aesthetic for the photos because mobile phones do not give a lot of options.

They even did some research on how filters affect you photo’s popularity. This can be related to psychological studies of color, warmer colors give a cheerful feelings but too much saturation while brings down the engagement (Yahoo Labs & Geogia Tech,n.d.) .

This studies shows that filters can act an important tools for the photographers to promote themselves. Everyone have different taste but using the right way to edit can gain more viewers and increase the popularity.
There might be some people who still prefer original photos more than filtered photos because original photos can show the photographer’s professional skills but if filtered photos can easily help boost your popularity in the business world with just edits, why not? In my opinion, editing is consider a professional skill too because one need a fundamental knowledge and “taste” in photography to edit it nicer.

5. Phone Camera

According to IDC report, smartphone sale had been increasing rapidly (IDC, 2014) while the CIPA report shows that cameras’ sale are dropping in the same time (CIPA, 2014).
Convenience is the main reason for this since most of us always bring around a phone with camera function and we can just take photos any time we want.

There are also of phone made specially for photography or should we call it in a new term- mobilegraphy.

In the old days, we loaded our cameras with film, took the shots, processed and printed the film. Suddenly, digital processors replaced film. Now we load our digital cameras with memory cards, take no heed of film expiration dates, forget the number of exposures on a roll, and have no need to worry about how many rolls we brought along with us on a certain day (McMulin,2012).

With the technologies today, everyone can be a photographer.
Unlike old days where photographer have to be careful and confident so that they can captured perfect photo with just one shot while in the present, everyone can take a good photos, all of their digital camera and phone camera  able to take multiple shots and they just need to choose one that is nicer from all of the shots.

There’s even an mobilegraphy contest specially for iphone users – http://www.ippawards.com/

Not only that, there are a lot of photography apps can be downloaded to beautify the photos or make the images more “professional” looks.

4. Development through time

Everything comes with a history behind, so does photography.

Photography first start off with pinhole principle that was mentioned
by the Mohist philosopher Mozi (墨子) in ancient China about light travel in straight lines and will be reflected on objects which form an inverted images through a pinhole.

Based on pinhole camera idea, Iraqi scientist  invented a camera obscure. Then they discovered that the process of projecting images on a surface through chemical reactions. In the past, there were a few of the professor and photographer had experiment with few of the chemicals together with exposure by light source to create images.

In the Renaissance and later centuries, the camera obscure was mainly used for scientific purposes in astronomy and, fitted with a lens, as a drawing aid for artists and amateur painters. (Steven,B. and James, W.M, 2008, p.11)

The artist sees both scene and drawing surface simultaneously, as in a photographic double exposure. This allows the artist to duplicate key points of the scene on the drawing surface, thus aiding in the accurate rendering of perspective.

Nicéphore Niépce, the very first photographer. He had been experiment with chemicals to use exposure and create images. He successfully taken an image and the process named as heliography. This process is exposed to light to make pictures appear.(Photography Redefined By Gaurav Sharma)

The very first photo taken by Nicéphore Niépce.
niepce-first-photo_1459_990x742

After the death of Nicéphore Niépce, his partner improved and produce the idea of daguerreotype. This technique produce a high detailed permanent photo.

Over the centuries, the photography technique had been process from temporary black and white images to permanent color images and finally with the help of technologies, it can develop into digital images with the use of digital camera and store a lot in memory card without worry about the photo’s color fading, torn or even storage to store those photos (unless you are rich enough like Bill Gate who store all his photos in a mountain’s cave). There are different kind of digital camera been used in photography field, such as compact camera, DSLR and even phone camera.

The first photo got captured digitally.
2910845400000578-0-image-a-54_1432577672647

There are few differences between compact camera (point-and-shoot) and DSLR.

Compact Camera

sony-point-and-shoot

The size is smaller and more convenient for the users to bring around. This type of camera is more suitable for amateur because it is easier to use. User can change filter and zooming but unlike DSLR, user just need to click to shoot an image and the device will process.

DSLR

Nikon-D3300-24-2MP-DSLR-SDL803025701-6-b2511

The size is more big and heavy to bring around. This type of camera is more suitable for professional photographer because it have more “controls” over the lighting so user need to have a basic knowledge of lighting in order to use it. There is also auto function but if you only use auto function,is better to just get a compact camera. The good thing that it has larger sensor which able user to capture image faster with better quality. Not only that, it have various kind of lenses that can be change but the lens itself can be very pricey.

A professional camera can take a lousy photos and a lousy camera and take a good photo, it’s all depends on what kind of camera system and users’ photography skills. (Wager.R, 2015)

Fuji-polaroid-mini-8-camera-film-instax-mini8-set-five-color-avaialable-black-yellow-pink-blueEven thought digital camera brings a lot of convenient such as editing function for photographer, some advertising agencies still prefer using Polaroid which they also called as truth-in-advertising shots (Jim.J, 2014). This is an improved version based on analog photos that need to go through a lot of process to get the prints while users just need to press the shutter button for the Polaroid and the film will process itself and print out.

As you may know, most of the magazine cover photos been edited before. Truth can be hurtful but the agencies want to know what you really look like.

Technologies keep on improving over time. Cameras getting more convenient and better for the users.
Currently we can record in video format and gif format so what about in the future? There’s a high possibility that the ideas of moving pictures on newspaper in Harry potter might come true.

Below are one of the exist example in reality about moving framed image .
It is actually just a screen behind the frame but it is similar to the idea of photography.

10. Expectation

My very first experience in web design as my college project makes me realize and learned a lot on how web designers’ world works.

One huge mistake I made is that I was too concerned about originality and wanted to create something that had not seen in other websites, something unique and I ended up not following the basic layout. Even if I start to build my project earlier, and I thought I had it but I did not expect that it takes more time which still ended up a result that I’m not satisfied with.

Because of that,I realize something. Is website’s originality a big issue and concerned by people ? Not really, especially towards your clients and users. Why? Clients just want their website to be effective in achieving their goal while Users doesn’t concern about originality instead, they are more concern about what they can and expect to get when they browse into a website. They browse in there for a reason.

Is hard to create a website with pure originality .You are able to see that most websites have almost the same layout but just different in their aesthetic view. When you browse into a website, you expect to see title , clickable brand/company name or/and logo , few icons ,navigation menu, contents, images ,and so on in the position they should be and also few common content fonts that used in webpage. Pictures below are examples of branded shoes (skechers and nike) websites design .

FireShot Screen Capture #019 - 'Shoes, Sneakers, Sandals & Boots - SKECHERS Official Site' - www_skechers_com FireShot Screen Capture #020 - 'Nike_com (MY)' - www_nike_com_my_en_gb

A slight difference can be see this two sites’ layout but it is still similar. Like the featured picture will be bigger than others and arrange in the center of the page , navigation bar and logo are always on the top. Even background colour are simple in order to make the pictures more attractive.

If something out from their expectation, such as when user mouse over an icon and it changes color, they expect to be clickable and when it is not,it become not user-friendly. We can add those animation effects to make our website more unique but it have to serve a purpose, a reason to be there. That’s is why target audience is more important over here and also that’s when “reference” comes in again.

Designers should always be expanding their knowledge of design, history, popular culture, politics, music, art, social conditions; moreover, we have to try to understand what motivates our own human interaction. This cumulative knowledge and experience is what helps us build more insightful design. We aspire to be those who can command visual and verbal language in order to articulate a message in the most poignant fashion. – Eric Karjaluto, Creative Director at smashLAB

Lastly, to conclude my topic, originality ideas and skills are vanishing fast due to the technologies today, but don’t concerned too much about it because no one can’t escape from the power of internet ,reference and influenced from the daily life. What really matters are the content and design that can satisfied the audience.

9. Laziness is a skill

As a web designer, I found out that the most important skill is laziness, in a good way.

One of my lecture once mentioned that people prefer hiring “lazy” employee because they will find a faster and efficient way to finish their project without doing twice while professional tend to figure out using a hard way and keep trying to achieve better result. He even said that,we as programmers, doesn’t need to memorize every single code. Memorizing might make us look professional when typing without referencing but it consume a lot of time.

Nowadays, there’s a lot of open source codes and template been uploaded on internet for the designer. So why memorize when we can just copy and paste the code? The open source are not just for saving the lazy programmer’s time but also giving an opportunity for other programmers to take what it provided and built on it layer by layer into something new.

Other than that, there’s a lot of people think that technologies had replaced talents and skills but I disagree to that, I’ve mentioned few of the reasons in previous posts. Another reason here is that not everyone can just take the open source template to make it better, even lazy people must have the fundamental skills and knowledge to edit the codes and develop it into a better one. Without the knowledge, one can only edit the content just like when you downloaded blog template , the designer/uploader had already left some instruction in the code for the users to know where to edit and add content(example shown in picture below that I downloaded from blogskin.com)

1df83c4a7c68ba02fb7670d26703d460

Not only that, there’s even a tool called Kuler , is a colour wheel that can guide and help us designer to achieve the best combination for our projects’ colour mood. Is the best tool because not all of us have the talent to differenciate and combine the colours into the one we want. So why keep on spend time in experimenting colours in traditional way just to achieve what you want? If you failed to get what you want, you have to waste the paints and paper again.

FireShot Screen Capture #022 - 'Color wheel I Color schemes - Adobe Color CC' - color_adobe_com_create_color-wheel__base=2&rule=Shades&selected=0&name=My Color Theme&mode=rgb&rgbvalues=0_75,0_451463707579689

Technologies does not replace skills but instead, they need skills and also able to help improve the user’s skills.

8. Plagiarism

When I try to search about my topic in Google chrome using the keywords of “originality” together with “Web” or “Internet”, there are always few links that related to “Plagiarism checker” in suggestion links.

As a mentioned in my previous past posts,we are surrounded by technologies which means information just hanging around us, because of these, the originality are more at risk. Even thought originality is not an big issue here but plagiarism is.

Today generations are 24/7 with technologies. They are used to search everything using it and a habit of search first and think later have been born. That is not a big deal but digital technologies does not only provide open source information but it also make copying and pasting texts and image easy ,this is why plagiarism is easily spotted in student’s essay. This is also why citation not only to show where we got our references from but also to prove that we did not plagiarism.

Other than that, designers usually post up their works on different kind of social media to promote themselves and that’s how some of them got their job. But with this method, is kind of risky. I’ve seen a lot of unethical people or should I call them as thieves, just claim those artist’ work as theirs and sell it out. Imagine all the time and hard work spent by the artist but the thieves just take and earn without doing anything other than selling. It doesn’t matter if they got permission by the artist and credit the artist, but no, they didn’t.

To avoid this, watermarks can be added on the artworks. I’ve seen few of the artist had done this but most don’t and I was wondering why. Isn’t it safer or doesn’t want the watermark to ruin the artwork?

7. Dependent

To create a better and unique work, we tend to rely, refer and built our works on each other using our point of view and style. Walt Disney even shown that a single object can be turned into 4 different art style by 4 artists with their own vision and idea. Below are the screen shots of the original tree and the paintings.

d3863d60a1f2ef7d26232aed0ccde4ae5b87308bcc8254e5a79b49ac024e5a67 84f3c5bce1fb6031039b87a13c511ace  4672200ee6a7f07ca1040fa95ff25a74 69ecdb2c346482cbfca88ca6f9af3313

I once receive a project to create an interactive design with them theme of futuristic city. I don’t know what my classmates did but during presentation day, I found out that few of the people did something similar to mine but in different kind of aesthetic style. This is because when we think about “futuristic”, things like robot, advance technology and the difference lifestyle between rich and poor will appear in our mind.We got all these information by referencing to sci-fi genre film, comic and novel . Because of this, we tend to fixed and stick to these ideas but as you can see, even if all of us have the same element, each of us are still able to produce and create the same thing into our own story/style which ended up different kind of results.
